Sources close to the former Anambra State governor told Punch that the potential defection is being driven by growing dissatisfaction with the ADC’s internal structure, as well as uncertainties surrounding its leadership following a recent Supreme Court ruling.

The apex court had overturned an earlier order that removed David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from their positions as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively. However, it did not settle the leadership dispute, instead sending the case back to the Federal High Court for further proceedings.

While some party members view the ruling as temporary relief, insiders say it has heightened concerns among coalition leaders, especially with fears that the final outcome could disrupt the party’s structure at a crucial time before the elections.

According to sources, the ongoing crisis—along with disagreements involving supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—has prompted Obi and his allies to reassess their position within the ADC.

One insider claimed the party’s structure appears tilted in favour of a particular aspirant and lacks clarity on zoning its presidential ticket to the South, raising concerns about the fairness of its primary process. The source also pointed to multiple legal battles within the party as a sign that it may not be a stable platform for Obi’s ambition.

It was further gathered that Obi has begun consultations and is in talks with the NDC, which has reportedly assured him of a clear path to its presidential ticket.

According to another source, Obi remains committed to contesting the 2027 election and is expected to make his decision public soon, with a possible defection likely in the coming days.
