The initiative, driven by the University of Benin Development Trust Fund (UNIBENTDF), was unveiled during a ceremony in Benin City ahead of the official fundraising launch scheduled for July 4, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, explained that the Trust Fund was created after studying successful self-funding models adopted by leading universities across the world.
According to him, the initiative is designed to reposition UNIBEN as a self-sustaining institution capable of funding major developmental projects beyond government subventions.
Prof. Omoregie disclosed that the fund would support the construction of a modern library, state-of-the-art hostels, a world-class hotel and conference centre, sports and recreational facilities, as well as a standard abattoir with agricultural research laboratories.
He noted that the projects would improve the learning environment, create employment opportunities, and generate sustainable revenue for both the university and surrounding communities.
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that the current administration inherited deteriorating hostel facilities and major electricity-related liabilities, making sustainable development a critical priority.
Chairman of the UNIBENTDF Board of Trustees, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, described the initiative as a major step toward making the university globally competitive and enterprise-driven.
He disclosed that discussions were already ongoing with alumni associations, investors, government representatives, and private sector stakeholders to attract partnerships for the ambitious development plan.
Pastor Ize-Iyamu added that the July 4 fundraising launch would further drive projects aimed at repositioning the institution for future growth and excellence.
Meanwhile, the university’s ICT team led by Mr. Kehinde Samuel unveiled the digital portal, which is expected to allow donors and partners monitor projects, track contributions, and ensure transparency throughout implementation.
During the vote of thanks, Dr. Mrs. Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor commended stakeholders, alumni, staff, students, and supporters for embracing the initiative.
She encouraged members of the public and well-wishers to continue supporting the vision and promoting the initiative using the hashtag #UNIBENTDF.
