Addressing supporters in Kano, Governor Yusuf cautioned his former political mentor against making remarks he considered disrespectful.

He warned that if Kwankwaso continued with his comments, he would be forced to reveal issues the former presidential candidate might not want made public.

Yusuf’s reaction followed recent remarks by Kwankwaso during an interview where the former leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) accused him of betrayal and vowed to challenge him politically ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Kwankwaso had expressed frustration over what he described as disloyalty from Yusuf and some of his former loyalists.

Using a Hausa proverb, he said, “Ina ruwan jaka da inda aka ajiye ta,” meaning, “A bag has no control over where it is placed.”

He added that he never expected betrayal from Yusuf, stating that he had placed complete trust in him but was disappointed by the outcome.

The former presidential candidate also criticised some individuals who benefited from his administration’s educational support programmes, claiming that some later turned against the political movement that sponsored them.

Responding to the accusations, Yusuf questioned why Kwankwaso, whom he described as a 69-year-old man, would refer to him, a 63-year-old, as a boy.

He explained that he had remained silent out of respect and loyalty but warned that he could respond if provoked further.

According to Yusuf, maintaining peace and stability in Kano remains his priority, but he stressed that his camp would not remain silent if the attacks continued.
