Lawmakers have been instructed to resume at the Senate chamber by 11 a.m. for the special session.

The notice for the emergency sitting was issued on June 15 by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, acting on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

According to the announcement, the extraordinary session was convened to enable senators to consider pressing issues requiring immediate legislative attention, particularly matters related to national security and other critical concerns.

The development means senators will return from recess ahead of schedule, as the upper chamber had earlier adjourned on June 11 and was originally expected to resume plenary on July 7.

The emergency meeting comes amid rising security challenges across several parts of the country, including reports of attacks, kidnappings, and other violent incidents that have heightened public concern.

The Senate’s decision mirrors a similar action by the House of Representatives, which recently held an emergency sitting to consider amendments to the 2025 Appropriation Act.

During that session, lawmakers reviewed a proposal seeking to extend the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30 to allow more time for project execution.
