The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oyigbo Division over allegations of extortion and abuse of office.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision follows claims made by a rights activist on Friday, who accused the DPO of extorting ₦500,000 from an individual allegedly arrested and detained without any known offence.

The activist, who shared what he described as proof of the payment on social media, also alleged that the officer filed a questionable charge against a woman, accusing her of stealing her own children during a dispute with her estranged husband. He further claimed the woman was later remanded in a correctional facility based on the charge.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the command had received the allegations and taken immediate action.

Agabe, a Superintendent of Police, said the officer has been removed from his post to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation into the matter.

She explained that the move aligns with the command’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism.

“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a publication circulating online alleging misconduct involving a Divisional Police Officer,” the statement read.

According to her, Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju expressed deep concern over the allegations and assured the public that a full investigation would be carried out.

“He reiterated that the command will not tolerate any form of misconduct, abuse of office, or actions capable of eroding public trust in the Nigeria Police Force,” she said.

The command assured residents that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate disciplinary action would follow based on the outcome of the probe.
