OSHIOMHOLE’S ENDURING INFLUENCE: WHY EDO NORTH REMAINS CRUCIAL TO TINUBU’S 2027 CALCULATIONS

Few politicians in Edo State embody that reality more than Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
Years after serving as governor and after holding some of the most significant positions in Nigerian politics, Oshiomhole remains one of the most recognisable and influential political figures in Edo North. His name continues to resonate across communities, party structures, and among voters who have followed his political journey for decades.
The 2023 presidential election offered a reminder of that enduring relevance.
While voting patterns varied across Edo State, Edo North emerged as the only senatorial district won by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Political observers offered different explanations for the outcome. Some pointed to the strength of the APC’s grassroots presence, while others highlighted historical voting patterns and local political dynamics.
Yet, one factor consistently featured in those conversations.
The influence of Adams Oshiomhole.
For many years, Oshiomhole has maintained a unique relationship with the people of Edo North. From his days as a labour leader fighting for workers’ rights to his tenure as governor and now as senator, he has built a political connection that extends beyond election campaigns.
That connection has translated into trust, familiarity, and a level of political credibility that few leaders sustain over such a long period.
This is not to suggest that elections are won by individuals alone. Electoral victories are the product of collective efforts involving political parties, candidates, grassroots mobilisation, and ultimately the choices made by voters.
However, it would be difficult to discuss the political landscape of Edo North without acknowledging Oshiomhole’s role in shaping it.
His ability to mobilise support, influence political conversations, and energise party structures continues to make him a significant force within the district.
As attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 elections, many political observers believe Edo North will once again play a pivotal role in Edo State’s electoral calculations.
The APC remains a formidable political force in the district, but history suggests that strong political structures often achieve their greatest success when combined with trusted leadership and effective grassroots engagement.
That is where Oshiomhole’s influence becomes particularly relevant.
For President Tinubu and the APC, Edo North represents more than just another senatorial district. It represents a political stronghold whose electoral significance has been demonstrated before and could prove important once again.
Whether 2027 ultimately follows the pattern of previous elections remains to be seen. Politics is dynamic, and voters will always have the final say.
What appears increasingly clear, however, is that any serious conversation about Edo North’s political future must include Adams Oshiomhole.
His political journey, his enduring connection with the people, and his continued relevance in public affairs ensure that he remains one of the most consequential voices in the region’s political landscape.
And as the road to 2027 gradually unfolds, that influence may once again become one of the most important factors to watch.
