According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Brazilian football icon reflected on one of the most difficult chapters of his life after embracing evangelical Christianity and becoming a preacher.

Alves, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career across Brazil, Spain, France and Italy, became the focus of global attention after facing allegations of sexual assault. Although he was later acquitted, the former defender spent more than a year in prison, an experience he says transformed his priorities and outlook.

The ex-Brazil international said material wealth no longer defines his happiness, stressing that his Christian faith has become the greatest source of fulfilment in his life.

“I earned millions of euros through God and football, but in prison I received only 113 euros a month, yet I was happier than before,” Alves said.

Reflecting further, he added: “I earned millions of euros through God, although I didn’t recognise Him at the time, and I made a lot of money through football. But in prison, living on 113 euros a month, I discovered I was happier than when I was earning millions.”

Alves also explained that his period in prison strengthened his relationship with God and gave him a renewed sense of purpose.

“I used to play football, and later I found myself doing cleaning work in prison. But God was always with me, and I asked myself, ‘What is the value of millions of euros without God?'”

The former full-back said he now devotes his life to missionary work, describing his spiritual transformation as the defining moment that reshaped his values and understanding of true happiness.
