Luis de la Fuente’s team arrived in the Spanish capital earlier in the day before paying a courtesy visit to King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Zarzuela Palace. The newly crowned champions later embarked on an open-top bus parade through Madrid’s packed streets, culminating at Plaza de Cibeles, where thousands of supporters had gathered since morning to celebrate their return.

The homecoming followed a night of unforgettable celebrations across Spain after Ferran Torres struck the extra-time winner against Argentina in New Jersey. The late-night victory sparked scenes of jubilation nationwide, with fans pouring into streets, bars and public squares, waving Spanish flags, singing, dancing and sounding car horns into the early hours of Monday.

Spain’s triumph also drew congratulatory messages from leaders of the tournament’s three host nations, including United States President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The victory cemented Spain’s place in football history. Having already lifted the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the country has become the first nation ever to simultaneously hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles.

However, the celebrations were marred by tragedy after authorities confirmed that a 13-year-old boy died in Salamanca, north-west of Madrid, when a fountain he had climbed with friends during the festivities collapsed.
