Kwankwaso Raises Alarm: Governors May Turn State Police Into Political Weapons

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Thursday, the national leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement said the renewed campaign for state police stems largely from failures in leadership, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where insecurity continues to pose a major challenge.

According to Kwankwaso, establishing state police without strong institutional safeguards could create more problems than it solves.

“There is a huge leadership failure in Northern Nigeria. State police is as a result of that failure,” he said.

He further warned that governors might use state police for political protection rather than public safety if adequate checks and balances are not put in place.

The former Kano State governor stressed that state-controlled police forces could easily become instruments of political office holders in the absence of effective oversight.

Kwankwaso also expressed concern that creating state police formations nationwide could lead to a wider spread of firearms, urging the government to exercise caution.

“The government must not allow the circulation of small arms just like that,” he added.
