Borno Police Arrest Five Men Over Tinubu Must Go T-Shirts In Maiduguri

Five men have been arrested and charged in Maiduguri, Borno State, over their alleged involvement in printing and wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”

The men were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the development was contained in a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Maiduguri and dated September 29, 2026. The document was addressed to the Chief Magistrate Court in the city.

The police alleged that the five men conspired to produce the T-shirts and wore them around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri on September 25. They were subsequently accused of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace and thuggery.

The allegations were said to be offences under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.

Police authorities alleged that the production and wearing of the shirts were intended to cause a breach of public peace in the area. The men were subsequently taken before the court to answer to the allegations. Reports indicate that they pleaded not guilty, while their lawyers sought bail.

The arrests have generated reactions from rights advocates and political groups. Amnesty International condemned the reported detention, arguing that expressing political dissent through a message on clothing should not, by itself, amount to a criminal offence.

The case comes amid increased political activity in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the “Tinubu Must Go” slogan appearing in opposition-related demonstrations and political activities.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the allegations against the five men remain subject to judicial determination, while the court process is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding their arrest and the charges filed against them.
