Fresh Twist In Alleged Coup Case As Army Postpones Ruling Again

Published

The Nigerian Army has postponed for the fourth time the ruling of the General Court Martial handling the case involving military officers accused of being connected to an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the ruling, which had been scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2026, has now been moved to Monday, October 5, 2026.

The development was contained in a notice issued to members of the court and other concerned parties and signed by Major M.U. Ardo, identified as the Liaison Officer. The notice stated that the General Court Martial sitting earlier adjourned to September 30 had been postponed until October 5.

The next sitting is scheduled to begin at 10am at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja. However, the Army did not disclose the reason for the latest postponement, stating only that any inconvenience caused by the change was regretted.

The latest development marks the fourth time the ruling has been deferred, extending proceedings in the military case. Reports indicate that the immediate ruling concerns the admissibility of statements attributed to some of the accused officers following a trial-within-a-trial.

Defence lawyers have challenged the statements, alleging that some of the accused officers were subjected to coercion, intimidation or other forms of pressure when the statements were obtained. The prosecution, however, has presented evidence seeking to establish that the statements were voluntarily made and should be admitted as evidence.

The General Court Martial, presided over by Air Vice Marshal H.I. Alhaji, is expected to determine the issue when it reconvenes on October 5.

The postponement does not itself determine the allegations against the officers, and the accused remain subject to the ongoing proceedings before the military tribunal.
