Nigeria’s 2027 Polls: ECOWAS Set To Deploy Youth Observers Across The Country

Published

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced plans to deploy youth election observers alongside its traditional monitoring teams during Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the initiative is designed to give young people a greater role in electoral observation and strengthen their participation in democratic processes across the region.

The Head of the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division, Serigne Mamadou Ka, disclosed the plan in Abuja during the fifth edition of the Sectoral Reflection Series on Elections and Democracy, organised by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) in collaboration with Legis360.

Ka said the youth observer initiative had already been piloted in Côte d’Ivoire and subsequently extended to Benin. He added that the programme would also feature in upcoming elections in Cabo Verde and The Gambia before being deployed in Nigeria.

He said ECOWAS was committed to ensuring that Nigeria would not be excluded from the initiative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ECOWAS official also called on political parties across West Africa to create more opportunities for young people to participate in their internal structures and decision-making processes, noting that youths make up a significant proportion of the region’s population but remain underrepresented in politics.

Ka identified limited access to finance as one of the major obstacles preventing young people from becoming more active in politics. He also cited social and cultural barriers, inadequate education and training, gender bias and weaknesses in internal party democracy as other challenges.

He stressed that improving youth participation would require greater access to financial resources, political education and training, while political parties must also become more inclusive.

Ka further urged young people to take greater responsibility for demanding representation and becoming more organised and committed to political participation.

Speaking at the event, PAACA Executive Director Ezenwa Nwagwu described the inclusion of young people in ECOWAS election observation missions as an important step towards strengthening democratic participation.

Nwagwu advised prospective youth observers to familiarise themselves with electoral laws, regulations and relevant ECOWAS protocols before taking part in monitoring activities.

He cautioned that election observation is a structured and law-governed exercise that requires adequate knowledge of the legal framework guiding the electoral process.

Nwagwu also linked stronger youth participation in democratic processes to efforts to address concerns over declining confidence in democratic institutions and growing interest in alternative forms of governance among some young people.

The planned ECOWAS initiative comes as preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections intensify, with other civil society organisations and election-monitoring groups also announcing programmes aimed at strengthening youth participation, electoral transparency and public confidence in the process.
