Alcaraz Roars Back To Glory, Clinches Japan Open Title In Tokyo
World number three Carlos Alcaraz has claimed the Japan Open title in Tokyo after defeating Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in the final on Tuesday.
The Spaniard, who was the top seed and defending champion, secured his first title since the Qatar Open in February after returning from a four-month absence caused by a wrist injury.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Alcaraz was made to work for the victory by world number 19 Lehecka, who made an impressive start at the Ariake Tennis Forest Park by breaking the Spaniard’s serve in the opening game.
Alcaraz responded strongly as the first set progressed, recovering from the early setback before producing two outstanding drop shots and eventually taking the tiebreak 7-4.
Lehecka continued to challenge the defending champion in the second set, but Alcaraz found a crucial break midway through the set before maintaining his composure to close out the match.
The triumph marked Alcaraz’s third tournament since returning from his wrist injury. Before winning in Tokyo, he had reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and also featured at the Laver Cup.
Reflecting on his return from injury, Alcaraz admitted that doubts crossed his mind during his recovery, particularly over whether he would be able to return at full strength.
“A lot of negative thoughts come to your mind: if you’re going to come back healthy, if you’re going to be the same as I was before,” he said.
The 22-year-old added that he worked hard to push those concerns aside and trusted his team throughout the recovery process.
Alcaraz’s victory in Tokyo takes his title tally for 2026 to three, following his success at the Australian Open, while it is the 27th ATP title of his career.
His latest triumph came just hours after world number one Jannik Sinner announced that he would end his season early because of an ongoing knee injury.
Alcaraz is scheduled to compete at the Shanghai Masters from Wednesday. He had withdrawn from last year’s tournament after winning the Japan Open, citing physical concerns and criticising the congested tennis calendar.
The Japan Open victory further strengthens Alcaraz’s momentum as he continues his return to competitive action following his lengthy injury absence.
