We Found A Solution – Chelle Explains How Nigeria Rescued 3-3 Draw Against Russia
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has attributed Nigeria’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia to tactical adjustments made in the attacking department during the second half of Tuesday’s international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
Nigeria took an early lead in the 10th minute through Kelechi Iheanacho, but Russia responded strongly before halftime, with Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak scoring to put the hosts ahead.
Aleksey Miranchuk then extended Russia’s advantage shortly after the restart, leaving Nigeria facing a 3-1 deficit following a difficult opening to the second half.
Speaking after the match, Chelle acknowledged that Russia had controlled significant periods of the game, particularly towards the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second period.
The coach, however, said changes to Nigeria’s attacking structure helped the team regain its threat and exploit spaces during transitions.
“This represents a draw. We achieved a significant moment at the beginning of the first half. They possessed substantial moments at the conclusion of the first half,” Chelle said.
“In the opening of the second half, the situation remained comparable. We discovered a resolution because tactically we implemented adjustments regarding our strikers.”
According to Bush Radio Academy, Chelle’s changes proved effective in the closing stages as Nigeria began to make better use of fast-break opportunities against the Russian defence.
Peter Edokpolor pulled one goal back for the Super Eagles before substitute Akor Adams completed the comeback with a 94th-minute equaliser following a swift counter-attack.
Chelle said the late goals reflected the impact of the tactical changes, noting that Russia struggled to respond to Nigeria’s approach during the final stages of the match.
“During the concluding phase of the second half, they failed to identify a resolution, and consequently we achieved two goals through transitional play,” he added.
The result represented a strong comeback for Nigeria after falling two goals behind and came after the Super Eagles had suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their previous AFCON qualifying fixture.
Chelle also praised the determination of his players, with the squad featuring nine debutants, for fighting back despite the difficult circumstances and securing a draw against the Russian side.
