May It Happen To Your Daughter – Pharmacist Loses His Cool Over Polygamy Comment
A married pharmacist has sparked reactions on social media after becoming upset when a Facebook user suggested that his views on polygamy could one day affect his daughter.
The pharmacist, Omeudo Chibuike, had taken to Facebook to share his opinion on polygamous marriages, arguing that a married man does not require the consent of his first wife before taking another wife.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Chibuike maintained that a man only needs to inform his existing wife of his decision to marry another woman, rather than seek her approval.
He wrote, “A man doesn’t need approval from the first wife before getting a second wife. He only needs to inform her. He can only seek for approval if it’s the first wife that will sponsor the marriage which is not always the case.”
His position, however, attracted a response from a Facebook user who challenged him to consider how he would feel if his daughter eventually found herself in a similar situation.
The user replied, “May what you said happen to your own daughter & I hope you’ll accept it wholeheartedly.”
The comment appeared to anger Chibuike, who responded with an abusive remark directed at the commenter and the person’s mother.
His reaction has since drawn attention to the wider debate surrounding polygamy, marital consent and whether principles people support for themselves should also be acceptable when they affect members of their families.
The exchange has generated further discussion online, with social media users debating the responsibilities of spouses, the importance of mutual agreement in marriage and the double standards that can emerge when issues are viewed differently depending on who is affected.
