Ramon Vega Takes On Infantino, Promises Major FIFA Reforms

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to contest the FIFA presidency next year, becoming the first publicly declared challenger to incumbent president Gianni Infantino.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the 55-year-old former Switzerland international is seeking major reforms within football’s global governing body, with a focus on restoring credibility, stability and trust among stakeholders.

Infantino said last month that he remained fully committed to leading FIFA, setting the stage for a potential contest in next year’s presidential election.

Vega, who also represented Celtic and Watford during his playing career, retired from football in 2004 before moving into the finance sector. He said his professional and personal experiences had prepared him to take on a leadership role in world football.

The former centre-back previously considered running for the FIFA presidency in 2015 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension and again declared his intention to challenge Infantino in 2019. However, he failed to secure the required support from at least five of FIFA’s 211 member associations and was therefore unable to appear on the ballot.

Announcing his latest bid, Vega said his primary objective was to unite the global football community and implement fundamental reforms within FIFA.

He argued that football should remain centred on the players, coaches, referees, supporters, clubs, leagues, associations and communities rather than being dominated by individuals or administrative structures.

Vega also criticised what he described as divisions and weak governance within football administration, claiming that these issues had damaged FIFA’s credibility and undermined confidence in the organisation.

He called for an end to internal power struggles, warning that disputes among football administrators should not negatively affect those who participate in and support the sport.

The former Tottenham defender maintained that FIFA required more than minor adjustments, insisting that fundamental changes were necessary to give the organisation a new direction.

Vega’s immediate challenge will be to secure the backing of the required member associations to qualify for the presidential ballot, having previously fallen short of that requirement in his earlier attempts.

His declaration introduces a new dimension to the FIFA presidential race, with Infantino seeking to retain his position and Vega positioning himself as a candidate for significant reform within the organisation.
