After ₦1bn Ransom Demand, Security Forces Rescue 20 NYSC Members In Imo
A joint security operation involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies has led to the rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian who were abducted in Imo State.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the victims were travelling from Ibadan to their respective NYSC orientation camps when gunmen attacked two buses conveying them along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State.
The abductors were reportedly demanding ₦50 million for each victim, bringing the total ransom demand to about ₦1 billion.
Security sources said the rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at a DSS facility, while operatives continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the abduction and track down any suspects who may still be at large.
It was not immediately clear whether any ransom was paid to secure the victims’ release.
The Managing Director of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited, Isiah Akpan, had earlier confirmed that the kidnappers made ransom demands following the abduction.
The development had caused concern among the victims’ families, with some relatives visiting the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his private residence in Bodija, Ibadan, on Saturday.
The families were accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, and the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Adeyeri.
Speaking on behalf of the affected families, Alhaja Akande and Oyebola Akande said the abductors had been contacting them through the mobile phones of the kidnapped prospective corps members.
They had appealed to the traditional ruler and the police authorities to intervene and facilitate the immediate and safe release of their loved ones.
The successful rescue operation has brought relief to the families, while security agencies continue efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
