A tragic incident has claimed the lives of three children aged six, eight and 12 after they reportedly drowned in an abandoned fish pond in Saniko Community, Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The children were identified as Great Anthony Ikpera, six; Goodluck Anthony Ikpera, eight; and Vwegba Jite Ikpera, 12. They were members of the Ikpera family from neighbouring Awirhe Community.

The incident reportedly came to light after the children’s parents raised the alarm over their disappearance on Saturday, prompting a search that continued into Sunday, October 11.

According to reports, the children were discovered in the abandoned fish pond on Sunday morning by residents and family members. The pond is located beside a flowing stream behind the community.

Agbarha Youth Council President, Rufus Ovotu, and a family member, who requested anonymity, confirmed the discovery. However, the circumstances surrounding how the children entered the pond have not been independently established.

The children’s bodies were reportedly recovered and buried beside the stream.

The incident has thrown the family into mourning, with residents and sympathisers visiting to express their condolences and offer support to the bereaved relatives.

Ovotu urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to their children’s movements and ensure they stay away from streams, ponds and other potentially dangerous water bodies, particularly during periods of high water levels.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by abandoned water bodies and the importance of taking precautionary measures to protect children from preventable accidents.
