Man United Crisis Deepens As Lisandro Martinez Questions Club’s £155m Transfer Spending
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has declined to comment directly on Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s hierarchy following the team’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
Martinez questioned Manchester United’s summer recruitment strategy after the defeat at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, expressing concerns about whether the club’s leadership had done enough to strengthen the squad.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the Argentine defender specifically criticised director of football Jason Wilcox over the club’s transfer decisions and called for greater scrutiny of those responsible for football operations.
The comments have added to the pressure on United’s management amid the club’s reported struggles at the beginning of the campaign. The team had won just two of its opening nine matches across all competitions, according to the report.
Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada reportedly oversaw £155 million in spending on first-team reinforcements during the summer transfer window. However, Martinez questioned whether the recruitment activity had sufficiently improved the squad.
Asked whether he intended to speak with Martinez about the interview, Carrick said he wanted to establish the facts before deciding how to respond.
The United manager explained that he had not watched the full interview and was therefore unable to comment meaningfully on the defender’s remarks.
Carrick also suggested that the disappointment of the defeat might have influenced Martinez’s comments, noting that emotions often run high immediately after a difficult result.
Rather than allowing the controversy to distract the team, Carrick urged his players to shift their attention to their next domestic fixture against Leeds United.
He stressed that the immediate priority was to move beyond the Champions League setback and prepare for the upcoming encounter.
Despite the team’s recent difficulties, Carrick expressed confidence in his players’ commitment and determination to improve their performances. He insisted that he had no doubts about their desire to win and their willingness to work towards better results.
Manchester United are scheduled to face Leeds United on October 18, with kick-off set for 2 p.m., as they seek to respond to their disappointing result against Atletico Madrid.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Martinez’s comments have brought renewed attention to United’s transfer strategy and the relationship between the playing squad and the club’s football leadership.
