Justice Served! Kogi Court Hands Down D3ath Sentence Over Friend’s Murder
A Kogi State High Court sitting in Okene has sentenced Abdulmutalib Abduljabar to death by hanging after finding him guilty of killing his friend, Momohjimoh Abduljafar.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the judgment was delivered on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by Justice A.S. Hussein, who ruled that the prosecution had presented overwhelming evidence establishing the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The court convicted Abduljabar of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Kogi State Penal Code, 2019, as amended.
During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Esther J. John, told the court in her written address that the defendant stabbed Abduljafar with a sharp, lethal object on June 6, 2025, at GKAS Hotel in Okene. The attack reportedly resulted in the victim’s death.
Justice Hussein dismissed the arguments presented by the defence counsel, Baba Shehu Ahmad, and subsequently sentenced Abduljabar to death by hanging.
Reacting to the judgment, the prosecuting counsel expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that justice had been served. She also commended the presiding judge for the ruling.
However, defence counsel Ahmad said he intended to appeal the decision after reviewing the certified true copy of the judgment.
Members of the deceased’s family also expressed satisfaction with the court’s verdict.
