I Am Not The Enemy — Timi Dakolo F!res Back at Critics Over Political Allegations

Published

Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has dismissed allegations that his recent appeal to Nigerians to avoid making enemies over political differences was politically motivated, insisting that his message was aimed at promoting unity among citizens.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the singer sparked debate on Thursday after taking to his X account to caution Nigerians against destroying personal relationships because of their support for different political parties.

Dakolo argued that ordinary citizens often engage in bitter arguments and lose valuable friendships while defending politicians who may maintain cordial relationships with one another behind the scenes.

His comments, however, attracted criticism from some social media users, who alleged that his position was influenced by his supposed support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Some critics also claimed that he had secured singing engagements for the party’s 2027 election campaign.

Responding to the backlash, the singer released a video in which he rejected the allegations and maintained that he was not an enemy of Nigerians.

Dakolo recalled being surprised by the way politicians who openly criticise and attack one another in public often behave cordially when they meet privately. He said such politicians could be seen exchanging pleasantries, hugging and engaging in friendly conversations despite their public disagreements.

According to the singer, the situation highlights the contradiction in how political disputes are handled by leaders and their supporters.

He alleged that some politicians exploit political differences to divide ordinary Nigerians, encouraging them to fight among themselves instead of working together to demand accountability and better governance.

Dakolo maintained that citizens should not allow political disagreements to destroy relationships with friends, relatives and acquaintances, particularly when the politicians they support may not share the same hostility.

He also rejected suggestions that his comments were intended to promote the interests of any political party, insisting that he remained politically independent and was not affiliated with any party.

The singer’s response comes amid growing debate over political loyalty, celebrity involvement in partisan activities and the impact of political divisions on personal relationships ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

His remarks have renewed discussions about whether political differences should determine personal relationships and the extent to which politicians’ public disagreements influence their supporters.
