Premier League Is Less Tactical — Liverpool Star Bradley Barcola Compares English Football to Ligue 1

Liverpool forward Bradley Barcola has described the Premier League as “less tactical” than France’s Ligue 1, explaining that differences in playing styles and positional responsibilities have made his transition to English football a learning process.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the French international discussed the differences between his experiences at Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain during an interview with French television programme Téléfoot.

Barcola joined Liverpool from PSG during the summer in a deal reportedly worth up to €140 million. He has since made eight appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

The forward has already made an impression by scoring a hat-trick in Liverpool’s 6-3 victory over LASK, marking the first treble of his professional career. However, he is still waiting to score his first Premier League goal, having come close during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brentford.

Speaking about his adaptation to English football, Barcola explained that Liverpool’s approach differs considerably from the system he played under PSG manager Luis Enrique.

“I am trying to adapt because it is very different to Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League? It is different. I find that it is less tactical. In any case, we (PSG) had a very, very tactical manager (Luis Enrique), but I find that it is less tactical; there are fewer changes on the pitch,” he said.

The winger explained that Enrique frequently required PSG players to rotate positions during matches, with attackers moving into central areas or switching to wider positions to create space and accommodate teammates.

According to Barcola, those movements were an important part of PSG’s attacking structure, requiring players to adjust their positioning regularly depending on the situation.

“It is true that, with my former manager, I had to come inside, play down the wing, and someone else would then take my position. Here, it is very different,” he added.

The forward’s comments highlight the adjustments he is making as he becomes accustomed to Liverpool’s tactical approach and the demands of the Premier League.

Barcola has also previously discussed the physical challenges associated with English football. In an interview with Sky Sports, he suggested that Ligue 1 featured more physically strong players while pointing to the greater running demands he has experienced in England.

He linked the increased workload to cramps he has suffered towards the closing stages of some matches this season.

Despite the challenges, Barcola will be hoping to build on his early contributions for Liverpool and find greater consistency as he continues adapting to his new surroundings.

His comments have also sparked discussion about the tactical and physical differences between the Premier League and Ligue 1, as players arriving from other European competitions adjust to the demands of English football.
