Dangote Speaks On Humility, Says Billionaire Status Won’t Stop Him From Living Simply
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has emphasised the importance of humility and simple living, saying his wealth would not prevent him from staying in a modest hotel or making do with basic comforts.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the billionaire industrialist made the remarks on Monday during the Vision 2030 event, where he also accepted an invitation from content creator Adebayo Ridwan, popularly known as Bae U Barbie, to appear on his YouTube programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
Dangote said people should remain humble regardless of their level of success, stressing that wealth and social status should not determine how individuals treat others or approach everyday life.
He explained that he was comfortable with simple living and could adapt to basic accommodation even with his position as one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen.
“And also to show people that, look, in life, you have to be as simple as you can, because anybody can be anybody,” Dangote said.
He added that he would have no problem staying in a poorly equipped hotel as long as it provided basic facilities for sleeping and bathing.
“Today, if you take me to anywhere, if you take me to the worst hotel, I can sleep, I can have my shower, I can live,” he said.
Dangote urged people not to allow success to make them feel superior to others, reiterating that simplicity should remain an important part of their lives.
“So because life is about simplicity, and make sure that, look, don’t take yourself up there,” he added.
The businessman also recalled an encounter with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, whom he said had served for eight years without using a driver. Dangote recounted meeting the prime minister during a visit to launch a fertiliser plant in the country and asking him why he did not have a driver.
Beyond his comments on simple living, Dangote’s acceptance of Bae U Barbie’s invitation highlighted the importance of connecting established business leaders with younger audiences.
Bae U Barbie explained that young Nigerians needed more direct access to prominent business figures, noting that many of Dangote’s previous interviews had appeared on platforms that younger audiences might not regularly follow.
Dangote agreed that engaging young people was important, describing them as the future and emphasising the responsibility of older generations to share their knowledge and experiences.
He also acknowledged the support he had received from younger Nigerians, expressing appreciation for their interest in his work and achievements.
His planned appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask is expected to provide another opportunity for younger audiences to hear directly from the billionaire about his experiences, business journey and approach to life.
