2027 Elections: Nigerians Will Judge INEC, Judiciary And Politicians, Mike Igini Warns

Published

Former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, has urged Nigerians to hold the electoral body, the judiciary and politicians accountable ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Igini made the call during an appearance on Arise Television on Tuesday, where he cautioned Nigerians against placing the entire responsibility for credible elections on INEC.

He urged citizens to scrutinise political leaders and candidates seeking elective offices before, during and after elections, stressing that accountability should extend beyond the electoral commission.

Igini also expressed concern over the growing role of the courts in determining election outcomes, arguing that disputes which should ordinarily be resolved through the voting process at polling units increasingly end up in courtrooms.

He called for continued improvements in Nigeria’s electoral system, particularly through the effective use of technology to strengthen transparency, credibility and public confidence in elections.

The former INEC official maintained that the responsibility for credible elections rests with multiple institutions and stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, the judiciary, election administrators and the electorate.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Igini’s remarks have renewed attention to electoral accountability, the resolution of election disputes and the need for reforms that strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant throughout the electoral cycle and assess the conduct of political actors alongside the performance of institutions responsible for managing and adjudicating elections.
