Bus Driver Switches From Queen’s English To Street Slang Over Passenger’s ₦1,000 Note

A Nigerian man has shared a hilarious account of a bus driver who reportedly switched from speaking fluent English to using Nigerian street slang during an argument with a female passenger over a ₦1,000 fare payment.

The man, who narrated the incident in a social media post, said he initially considered the driver calm, intelligent and well-mannered because of his polished English.

However, the driver’s behaviour reportedly changed when a woman travelling with her two schoolchildren handed him a ₦1,000 note and requested that he stop at her destination.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the driver became angry over the denomination of the money and insisted that the woman should provide smaller notes before he could proceed.

Recounting the driver’s reaction, the narrator said he shouted, “Na this early morning you dey give me ₦1,000? Better go and find change now, unless una never ready to go to school.”

The disagreement reportedly attracted the attention of other passengers, who attempted to settle the matter by explaining that the woman was entitled to ₦400 in change. They suggested that the driver give her ₦500 and retain the remaining ₦100.

However, the driver allegedly refused to accept the arrangement, resulting in an argument that lasted approximately 10 minutes.

The situation reportedly took another turn when road safety officers intercepted the driver for allegedly driving against traffic.

According to the narrator, the driver immediately switched back to speaking fluent English when the officers approached the vehicle, leaving the passengers amused by his sudden change in communication style.

Despite the laughter, the passengers were reportedly delayed by the incident, while the officers ordered everyone to alight from the vehicle and seized the driver’s keys.

The woman eventually left her money with the driver, but the narrator claimed that the driver later had to pay more than ₦15,000 to secure the release of his vehicle.

Reflecting on the experience, the man said the incident completely changed his initial impression of the driver, whom he had earlier regarded as a calm and sophisticated individual.

The story has highlighted the humorous situations that can arise during public transportation, particularly disagreements over fares and the availability of smaller denominations.
