Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From Portugal Duty, Leaves Behind Unmatched International Records
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his remarkable 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a video shared across his social media platforms, revealing that he would no longer represent Portugal at international level.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Ronaldo retires from international football with an extraordinary record of 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal between 2003 and 2026. His achievements make him the highest goalscorer and most-capped player in the history of men’s international football.
In his emotional farewell message, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star expressed gratitude to the Portuguese people for their support throughout his international career.
Ronaldo said he had enjoyed the privilege and responsibility of wearing Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt for 23 years but believed the time had come to hand it over to the next generation.
He explained that the decision was not an easy one, noting that it involved emotions as much as personal considerations.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also thanked his teammates, coaches, family members and supporters who contributed to his journey with the national team.
During his illustrious international career, Ronaldo helped Portugal win the 2016 UEFA European Championship, marking the country’s first major international trophy. He also captained the national side to UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.
Despite his numerous achievements, the legendary forward never won the FIFA World Cup. Portugal’s fourth-place finish at the 2006 tournament remained the country’s best result during his international career.
His retirement announcement comes amid reports of tensions involving Portugal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, during the previous international break.
However, Ronaldo’s decision is limited to international football, as he has not announced any plans to end his club career.
His departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Portuguese football, with the legendary number seven leaving behind records and achievements that will be difficult for future generations to surpass.
