Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the former vice president praised the young Nigerian players after they defeated Japan 2-1 in the final played in Rabat on Saturday, November 7, becoming the first African nation to win the tournament.
Nigeria took the lead in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru, whose long-range effort slipped past the Japanese goalkeeper. Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the Flamingos’ advantage just two minutes into the second half, putting Nigeria in a strong position to secure the historic title.
Japan later reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito, who scored with 10 minutes remaining. However, the Nigerian team held on to its lead until the final whistle to secure the championship.
Reacting to the achievement, Atiku commended the players, captain Harmony Chidi, head coach Akeem Busari, and the entire technical and support staff for their contributions to the historic success.
In a congratulatory message shared on his official X account, the former vice president described the victory as a moment of immense pride for Nigeria, noting that the players had fulfilled their dream of making the country proud.
Atiku also recalled the captain’s earlier expression of hope that the team would achieve something memorable for their teammates and the nation, saying the dream had now become a reality.
He further praised the young footballers for demonstrating the potential of Nigerian talent when given the right support and opportunities to succeed.
The former vice president expressed hope that the Flamingos’ achievement would encourage more young Nigerian girls to pursue their ambitions in sports and other fields with confidence and determination.
He thanked the players for bringing joy and unity to the country, describing their historic accomplishment as a source of national pride.
The victory represents a major milestone for Nigerian football, as the Flamingos have made history by becoming the first African team to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
