According to sources, Nigeria’s prominent anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has extended invitations to eight former ministers who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari. The purpose of these invitations is to question the former ministers regarding allegations of corruption during their tenures.
The invitation letters, sent out before the suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the EFCC chairman, requested the former government officials to provide explanations regarding the utilization of allocated funds for designated projects within their ministries during their respective terms.
One of the former ministers who has already been invited for questioning is Pauline Tallen, the former Minister of Women’s Affairs, who was allegedly involved in a N2 billion fraud case, including the diversion of funds from the African First Lady Peace Mission Project. Additionally, approximately seven other former ministers have received invitations from the EFCC.
It is worth noting that Sale Mamman, a former Minister of Power under President Buhari, was recently arrested and detained by the commission in connection with an alleged N22 billion fraud related to power projects. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the immediate past Minister of Police Affairs, has also been summoned to address questions regarding the handling of the Police Trust Fund, including allegations of purchasing refurbished vehicles for the Nigeria Police as new.
Regarding the invitations, former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika and immediate past Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami have also been called upon by the EFCC for questioning.
As these investigations proceed, the former ministers will be expected to provide clarifications and account for their actions during their time in office.
