The government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed its commitment to enhancing power supply nationwide, even in the face of an upcoming electricity tariff increase on July 1.

In a meeting between the Ministry of Power’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Temitope Fashedemi, and President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Energy, Ms Olu Verheijen, the ministry’s spokesperson, Ms Chinwe Udouwem, stated that Fashedemi made the announcement.

Fashedemi expressed optimism that the technical directors and agency heads under the ministry would brief Verheijen on ongoing or completed projects, enabling her to address the challenges facing the sector.

Verheijen emphasized the critical role of the power sector in national growth and productivity. She acknowledged the positive impact brought about by power sector reforms and stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to achieve a comprehensive and lasting solution.

She also highlighted the necessity of creating a conducive environment that fosters private sector growth and ensures affordable electricity tariffs for households, the primary consumers of electricity.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s power supply increased to 5,852 gigawatt hours in the first quarter of 2023.
