According to data obtained, the conversion of petrol vehicles with a 1.6-liter engine can cost between N300,000 and N400,000, while tricycles with 4-Stroke Engine would require between N100,000 to N200,000 for conversion.

Lorries and vans face even higher costs, with conversion expenses reaching as much as N1.8 million, and 4-Stroke Petrol generator engines requiring about N90,000.

While the shift to CNG offers economic benefits, with cost savings of up to 75 percent for tricycles, experts warn against the dangers of utilizing unqualified personnel in the conversion process.

The federal government had initiated programs to promote the use of gas as an alternative fuel, aiming to capitalize on Nigeria’s vast gas reserves. However, the high conversion costs could hinder the projected goal of converting about one million cars by the end of 2021.

PwC Nigeria estimates that utilizing Nigeria’s recoverable proven gas reserves for domestic consumption could generate significant economic value and create millions of jobs annually.

Nevertheless, the current cost of converting vehicles to CNG remains a pressing concern for the country’s citizens seeking affordable and environmentally friendly fuel options.
