This committee, set to collaborate closely with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, will propose recommendations aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers while ensuring the security and economic well-being of all Nigerians.

The President emphasized that the formation of this committee presents a “life-changing opportunity” for Nigeria, with the potential to revolutionize the livestock industry and create employment opportunities for millions.

Tinubu stated, “The Federal Government is fully prepared to cover the cost of acquiring the land. These opportunities will provide gainful employment for our veterinary doctors and open doors for the private sector while offering new educational opportunities for herders and their children. Medical facilities will be established. This is a transformative opportunity within our grasp.”

He further envisioned a future where Nigeria produces sufficient milk for schoolchildren, becomes a net exporter of dairy products, significantly contributes to the leather industry, and establishes widespread cold storage facilities, all of which can generate employment across the nation.

Tinubu also commended Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, the former Governor of Kano State and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for convening the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Conflict Mitigation in Nigeria, which served as the basis for establishing the committee.

He recognized that the persistent conflict between herders and farmers is a domestic issue that has endured for far too long, and he expressed determination to find a solution to this long-standing problem.

Tinubu added that the prolonged disputes between herders and farmers were not the fault of those directly involved but a consequence of leadership’s inability to provide immediate solutions. He stressed the importance of leadership in problem-solving, which requires thoughtful action.

In his remarks, Ganduje highlighted that the committee’s report contains numerous recommendations that, if implemented, will enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, promote environmental conservation, address the root causes of conflicts between farmers and pastoralists, and reduce the need for importing animal products such as milk and beef.
