Umar had brought the petition before the tribunal to challenge Aliyu’s win. Despite Umar’s claims of electoral fraud and the alleged disqualification of Aliyu’s Deputy, Idris Gobir, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Aliyu the winner of the election.
