Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25th election, requested Tinubu’s academic records to support his appeal before the Supreme Court.

However, certificate forgery allegations are not new in Nigerian politics, and several prominent politicians have faced such accusations. This article highlights six Nigerian politicians who have been embroiled in certificate forgery controversies.

  1. Bola Tinubu: Certificate forgery allegations regarding Tinubu’s education were first raised during his initial tenure as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2003 by the late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi. These allegations resurfaced during the 2023 elections when Tinubu omitted details of his primary and secondary education in his INEC form but claimed to have attended Chicago State University. Despite the controversy, Tinubu emerged as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. Atiku Abubakar continues to raise questions about Tinubu’s academic credentials, prompting CSU to release a 32-page document containing Tinubu’s academic record.
  2. Muhammadu Buhari: Former President Muhammadu Buhari faced similar scrutiny regarding his secondary school certificate before the 2015 and 2019 elections. Critics online ridiculed him, claiming he did not possess a West African Secondary School Certificate and did not attend secondary school. In response, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) issued an attestation certificate to confirm that Buhari obtained a secondary school certificate from the examination body in 1961.
