His comments come in response to the disqualification of Sylva’s candidacy as the APC flag bearer for the state’s November 11 governorship election by a High Court in Abuja.
A Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on Monday to disqualify Sylva from running as the APC candidate. An aggrieved member of the APC in the state, Demesuoyefa Kolomo, had filed a lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/821/2023) seeking the court’s determination of Sylva’s eligibility to participate in the election. Kolomo questioned Sylva’s qualifications due to his previous terms as governor of Bayelsa from May 29, 2007, to April 15, 2008, and from May 27, 2008, to January 27, 2012.
Justice Donatus Okorowo, in his verdict, ruled that Sylva was ineligible to contest the election because he had been sworn in as governor of the state twice. The judge pointed out that running for a third term would violate the provision of the 1999 constitution, as it would exceed the maximum of eight years in power.
In response to this judgment, Diri released a statement titled “Bayelsa Doesn’t Deserve a Serial Deceiver as Governor,” in which he expressed doubts about Sylva’s trustworthiness.
