Amidst rumors of his candidacy being a mere placeholder, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, Senator Athan Achonu, has firmly asserted that he is committed to running for the position and will not step aside.
Senator Achonu made this declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. In response to speculations that he might be bought off to withdraw from the race, he emphasized his determination to continue and stand as the party’s candidate.
He stated that even if offered a substantial amount, such as $100 million, he would not vacate his position. Senator Achonu further asserted that he is a person of integrity and cannot be swayed by money.
He clarified that he initially had no intention of running for the governorship but was persuaded by his supporters who believed in him and wished for him to continue in politics. Additionally, his desire to bring about positive change in Imo State motivated him to enter the gubernatorial contest.
Senator Achonu also expressed concern about the challenges of doing business in the South-East region and highlighted his goal of making a difference in the state.
