Southeast Governors Directed To Pay N8 Billion To Nnamdi Kanu In Court Ruling

This sum serves as reparation for violating Kanu’s fundamental human rights.

Justice A.O. Onovo delivered this order while giving a verdict on Kanu’s appeal regarding the proscription of IPOB. Kanu, represented by his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had filed a lawsuit against the Southeast governors and the Federal Government in the Enugu High Court. The lawsuit concerned the proscription of IPOB and the violation of Kanu’s fundamental rights in 2017.

The presiding judge also instructed the Southeast governors to issue an apology to Kanu and publish this apology in three national newspapers.

A statement by Ejimakor, titled ‘Mazi Nnamdi Kanu/IPOB wins landmark victory against proscription of IPOB,’ conveyed this development.

The statement reads: “Today, I led a team of lawyers to a landmark victory before the High Court of Enugu State in SUIT NO: E/20/2023 filed in January 2023 against the Southeast Governors’ Forum and the FG (Respondents) for their collective executive actions (in 2017) that led to the proscription of IPOB and declaring it a terrorist group in contravention of Section 42 of the Constitution, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of ethnicity.”
