The former Vice President stressed that the Supreme Court and the judiciary should not allow themselves to become entangled in political matters, which has become a prevailing trend in many institutions across the country.

Atiku emphasized that the serious allegations raised by the retired Justice, who had served with distinction for over four decades, should not be dismissed.

He stated, “Even Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad’s reprimand is an acknowledgment from within the Supreme Court that all is not well.

The court and the entire judiciary must resist political influences, a trend that has become common in Nigeria’s institutions. Moreover, the strong criticism from the esteemed Justice, with over four decades of service, should not be ignored.”

Recall that during a valedictory session held in his honor last Friday, retired Justice Dattijo highlighted the extensive powers of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), which have the potential to disrupt the course of justice.

Dattijo pointed out that the CJN serves as the Chairman of the National Judicial Commission (NJC), which oversees judge appointments and discipline, and also chairs the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC), the National Judicial Institute (NJI), and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) responsible for appointing Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

The former justice advocated for a reduction in the CJN’s powers, citing concerns that such extensive authority can be easily misused. He called for a change in this paradigm, highlighting that these significant powers are susceptible to abuse.
