In a survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states on the issue of correctional center congestion, lawyers and other respondents expressed dismay over the government’s responsibility for sustaining a large population of prisoners on death row.
The participants emphasized that the death penalty remains a legal provision in Nigeria, and given that governors have pledged to uphold the constitution, they are obliged to sign death warrants.
Dr. Oreoluwa Odunniyi, a lecturer in the Department of Public Law at the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), called for expedited hearings for inmates as a strategy to alleviate the congestion in correctional centers nationwide.
In an interview with NAN in Ile-Ife, Odunniyi pointed out that a significant number of inmates in correctional centers have been awaiting trial for years.
