Kalu made this proposal during the conclusion of a two-day post-inauguration retreat organized by the National Defence College in Abuja for members of the House Committee on Defence.
Highlighting the necessity to move beyond traditional security measures and confront emerging space threats, Kalu stressed the importance of establishing a Space Service Chief to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity in the face of evolving modern warfare.
In urging the creation of a Space Service Chief, Kalu remarked, “Some of the warfare is now taking place in space.
And I can assure you, if we ignore that, we will not be doing justice to the mandate of protecting the territorial borders of this country.”
Kalu also expressed his support for the Defence Industry Corporation (DICON) Bill and the Armed Forces Trust Fund Bill, currently undergoing re-gazetting in the National Assembly.
Despite being passed by the 9th Assembly, these bills did not receive the assent of former President Muhammad Buhari. Kalu, however, expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would prioritize these bills, emphasizing their crucial role in promoting local content and manufacturing essential tools for the Armed Forces.
“With the Bills, there will be a stimulation of local content in manufacturing the tools and the equipment needed to keep our nation safe,” he stated, urging swift action from President Tinubu to convert military funding contracts into military industrial complexes.
Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson, commended the leadership of the 10th House of Representatives and pledged the committee’s dedication to collaborating with the Defence sector to achieve the legislative agenda of the Green Chamber and address insecurity in Nigeria.
