Renowned elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has expressed apprehension regarding the actions of former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike……..CONTINUE READING
In an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Clark questioned Wike’s decision to maintain control over party structures, despite publicly declaring that he would not contest the 2027 presidential election against the incumbent President. The PANDEF leader raised concerns about the potential influence Wike may exert over the governance of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration, particularly in Rivers State.
Clark, who highlighted the irony of Wike, once a vocal opponent of godfatherism, now allegedly seeking to control political structures, warned of the possible consequences if former governors continue to assert dominance over their successors and state assemblies, potentially causing widespread confusion in Nigeria.
Expressing gratitude for President Tinubu’s previous intervention in the Rivers crisis, Clark cautioned that recent developments, including Wike’s statements and the defection of 27 members of the state House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), indicated lingering tensions.
Questioning the necessity for Wike, with a history of holding significant political positions, to maintain such control, especially in light of his public commitment not to contest the upcoming election, Clark urged the President to address Wike’s actions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Rivers State for the stability of the Niger Delta region and the national economy.
In his letter to Tinubu, Clark wrote, “As a member of your cabinet, you may need to call this minister to order to face the work in the quietness which is demanded of him. He should focus on his office and know that he is just one among a cabinet of 48 persons, besides the Vice President and yourself. The country has enough problems which your government must sit down to solve. Besides, Rivers State is very important to the stability of the Niger Delta and the overall national economy. Therefore, any breakdown of law and order there will not be in the overall interest of all.
