The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), acting on behalf of the Federal Government, has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the privacy and safeguarding of Nigerians’ data. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC, made this declaration during the unveiling of the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan on Data Privacy and Protection in Abuja on Tuesday.
Olatunji emphasized NDPC’s dedication to shielding Nigerians from identity misuse and unauthorized data access, highlighting the potential threats associated with such actions. He stated, “In the area of security, this is one area we’re also looking at in terms of data privacy; the malicious use of identity and unauthorized access to people’s data are being used for various purposes.”
The CEO underscored the multifaceted benefits of this initiative, linking it to job creation, data generation, and bolstering confidence in businesses. He elaborated on the comprehensive approach, detailing approximately 69 major initiatives and activities across five key pillars: governance, awareness, human capital development, ecosystem, and technology.
Olatunji emphasized the importance of home-grown solutions, particularly in the development of applications to address various aspects, including law enforcement, investigations, and overall privacy enforcement. The overarching goal is to create a robust framework that ensures privacy and protection across all sectors, fostering confidence, job opportunities, and technological advancements within and beyond Nigeria.
