In a statement released by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the organization highlighted the extensive implications of the economic challenge on the citizens of the country. Ajaero stressed the need for prompt measures to address the issue and alleviate the hardships faced by the already struggling Nigerian populace.

Ajaero also questioned the effectiveness of the government’s anti-corruption agenda, pointing to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s assertion that individuals with illicit wealth were hoarding cash to evade detection. This, he argued, amounted to a significant indictment of the government’s anti-corruption efforts, suggesting a surge in corruption levels since the current administration took office.

The NLC president expressed dismay over the impact on ordinary citizens who, due to the cash scarcity, were compelled to spend more time queuing at banks to access their hard-earned income. He criticized the apparent inconvenience caused by the need for citizens to purchase their own money, citing additional costs and devaluation of income.

Ajaero raised concerns about the potential for public confidence in banks to erode, emphasizing the negative effects on the citizenry’s active participation in the banking system. He also criticized the economic burden imposed on Nigerians through fees charged by Point of Sale (POS) operators, further diminishing the value of their income.

The NLC highlighted the risk of inciting public discontent and mobilization against what they deemed insensitive and detrimental government policies. Ajaero warned that continuously subjecting Nigerians to actions that impede their access to basic survival could lead to widespread public dissatisfaction.

As the festive season approached, the NLC emphasized the potential overshadowing of traditional celebrations by the prevailing cash shortage. The unavailability of cash was identified as exacerbating daily challenges and worsening the economic struggles faced by ordinary citizens.

In conclusion, the NLC called on the government to take immediate and decisive action to address the cash crunch, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that citizens could enjoy the festive season without undue financial strain.
