Babatunde Irukera, the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, highlighted the persistently high levels of loan defaults among Nigerians, despite the FCCPC’s efforts to reduce harassment within the sector. He emphasized the need to move away from unethical and inappropriate loan recovery mechanisms, stating that abusive tactics are not the only effective means of communication.

Irukera expressed the Commission’s commitment to finding more sensible and responsible ways to facilitate loan recovery. He acknowledged the importance of striking a balance, as the inability of digital money lenders to recover loans could pose a consumer protection problem, particularly for those in need of short-term unsecured lending.

Anticipating the release of new regulations in 2024, Irukera outlined a broader approach to responsible borrowing and lending by both individuals and corporations. He emphasized the importance of establishing a centralized credit system, envisioning a future where even landlords of school premises could report on the fiscal responsibility and creditworthiness of tenants, students, and parents.

The FCCPC recently reported a significant reduction in harassment and defamatory messages within the digital lending sector, achieving an 80% decrease. Irukera pointed out that other countries, including India, Kenya, Brazil, Ghana, and Uganda, are still grappling with challenges in digital lending and are looking to learn from the regulatory measures implemented in Nigeria.
