During the event, where acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie unveiled her latest children’s book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf,” Obi expressed concern over the diminishing reading culture among Nigerian youths. He attributed this decline to a flawed educational system, an excessive pursuit of materialism, insufficient reading materials and functional libraries, and a waning passion for reading among the youth.
In a statement released on Saturday, Obi emphasized the significance of reading in educational development and advocated for its consistent encouragement. The event drew notable figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, academics like Prof. Hakeem Bello-Osagie, and activists like Dr. Oby Ezekwesili and Ndidi Nwuneli, all rallying behind the call to reignite the passion for reading among Nigerian youths.
Obi echoed the sentiment that “readers are leaders,” emphasizing that reading fosters critical thinking and analytical abilities crucial for success in today’s intricate world. Commending Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for her commitment to societal causes through literary works, Obi thanked her for organizing the event and lauded her contributions to the betterment of society.
Reiterating his vision for Nigeria’s future, the former governor asserted that the “New Nigeria” he envisions would empower talented youths, encouraging them to discover their abilities, fuel their passions, and develop their skills for the progress of society.
