The protesters insisted on the swift endorsement of the Orilowo Perishable Food Market to be situated at Plot 705 Adekunle Bus Stop, Ikorodu Road, Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area. Leading the demonstration, Alex Omotehinse, President of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights, conveyed the association’s plea for official approval, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to established market regulations and standards.
Omotehinse highlighted the association’s prior correspondence with Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, dated May 16, 2022, wherein they sought approval for a designated site. However, the LCDA officials allegedly withheld the requested approval, jeopardizing the livelihoods of the market participants.
In an official statement, Omotehinse asserted, “We are therefore, by this petition, demanding the intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly to call Agboyi-Ketu LCDA and relevant agencies to order, with the view to actualising the approval of the requested space as the operational base of the Orilowo Perishable Food Market Association.”
A petition presented to the Assembly expressed optimism in the Speaker’s commitment to good governance and sought the Assembly’s intervention to address the challenges faced by market participants. The Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, addressed the association, urging patience and assuring them that justice would prevail. He emphasized the need to hear from all stakeholders, including the LCDA chairman, before making a decision.
