In a significant move toward inclusivity and empowerment, the Federal Government of Nigeria is gearing up to enforce a policy requiring all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to allocate five per cent of employment opportunities to persons with disabilities nationwide. This announcement was made by Mohammed Abba-Isa, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on persons with disabilities, during a meeting in Damaturu, Yobe State. CONTINUE READING
Abba-Isa emphasized the pivotal role of his office, working in tandem with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, to empower persons with disabilities. The primary objective is to curtail the number of individuals with disabilities resorting to street begging for sustenance. He stressed that the initiative aims to bring about positive impacts on the lives of persons with disabilities through increased employment opportunities and empowerment programs.
“All these MDAs must reserve 5 per cent for persons with disability because the only way we are going to caution impacts on persons with disabilities is through employment and empowerment,” remarked Abba-Isa. This move signifies a commitment by the government to foster inclusivity, address societal challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, and provide them with equal opportunities for a more dignified livelihood.
The proposed policy aligns with global efforts to create more accessible and equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities, recognizing the valuable contributions they can make to various sectors when given the chance. As the initiative progresses, it is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for the disabled community in Nigeria.
