In a letter penned by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Town Union Matters, Collins Nwabunwanne, Igwe Ezeani was accused of violating the Code of Conduct for traditional rulers in Anambra State. The specific transgression cited in the letter was Igwe Ezeani’s failure to obtain permission from Igwe Kenneth Orizu of Nnewi, the traditional ruler of Senator Ubah’s community, before bestowing the chieftaincy title upon him.

The suspension letter emphasized the significance of adhering to the established protocols outlined in the Code of Conduct. It stressed that no traditional ruler is permitted to confer a chieftaincy title on an individual from outside their domain without obtaining explicit permission from the traditional ruler of the recipient’s community.

The letter stated, “We have received confirmed reports that you, as the traditional ruler of Neni, conferred such a phantom chieftaincy title on one Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in violation of the Code of Conduct and without clearance from the Ministry.”

Regardless of the speculated motives behind Igwe Ezeani’s actions, the letter underscored that the primary concern was the breach of established order and good governance. In exercising the powers vested in him by Section 2 (C) of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers (Amendment) Law, 2020, Governor Soludo suspended Igwe Ezeani’s recognition as the traditional ruler of Neni, effective immediately and until further notice. This decisive action was deemed necessary to maintain order and uphold the principles of good governance in Anambra State.
