The court’s decision followed a forfeiture notice presented by Jersey’s Attorney General, Mark Temple KC, who claimed that the money was likely stolen by officials in the Nigerian Government during the mentioned period. The controversy surrounding the purchase of weapons against insurgency had implicated the then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, in diverting funds intended for security equipment during Jonathan’s administration.
In a noteworthy development, the Royal Court determined that the funds in the Jersey bank account were not utilized for the arms purchase. Temple emphasized that the Government of Jersey is closely collaborating with Nigeria in the repatriation process.
Temple further alleged that part of the funds had been shared with family members of politicians in the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party in anticipation of the 2015 general election. He expressed his intent to negotiate an asset return agreement with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, citing the effectiveness of the 2018 Forfeiture Law in recovering proceeds of corruption and returning the money to victims of crime.
