Maureen Chinaka, the Public Relations Officer of the command, issued a statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, providing details of the incident. According to the statement, on January 26, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the police received information that at around 7:00 p.m. on the same day, Prof. Godwin Emezue was abducted by unknown individuals while he and his wife were in their vehicle at a petrol station in Umuopara, Umuahia South LGA.

The statement revealed that during the incident, the assailants confiscated Prof. Emezue’s wife’s ATM card, forcibly took the Deputy Vice-Chancellor into a Lexus SUV, and fled the scene.

The Abia State Police Command is actively deploying resources, including intelligence and technical assistance, to investigate the crime and ensure the safe rescue of the victim. The statement called on the public to remain calm, continue with their lawful activities, and stay vigilant while being security conscious.

Additionally, the police urged the cooperation of the public in providing any valuable information that could assist in resolving the situation and enhancing overall security in the state.
