A Nigeria Security Report from December 2023 by Beacon Consulting Limited revealed alarming statistics, stating that 519 individuals were abducted across 229 local government areas in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Incidents of abductions have become a daily occurrence since December 24, 2023, following an attack by suspected bandits on Garam, a community in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger state, bordering the Bwari area council of the FCT. On January 13, 2024, bandits abducted six sisters and their father in the Bwari Area Council, with the tragic killing of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, one of the girls, sparking nationwide anger.
Recent attacks around Mangu town in Plateau State resulted in the death of at least 30 people and numerous injuries. Minister Idris, however, assured the public that the government is boldly confronting these threats. In the past week, several bandits, kidnappers, and militants have been neutralized or arrested.
Idris emphasized the government’s duty and responsibility of care to every Nigerian, irrespective of age, gender, religion, ethnicity, or social class. He reassured that the perpetrators of violence in Plateau State and other affected areas will be brought to justice, restoring peace to affected communities.
Addressing the economic challenges, the minister assured Nigerians that coordinated efforts are underway to address inflation, stabilize foreign exchange rates, and create an enabling environment for business and investment. Impactful interventions, including a Students’ Loan Scheme and the deployment of lower-cost CNG mass transit buses, are being implemented to alleviate economic hardships.
Idris urged Nigerians to take advantage of these opportunities designed for the benefit of all. On the issue of relocating the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and certain departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria, he dismissed claims of political motivations. Instead, he emphasized that these moves are pragmatic administrative steps aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing operating costs, urging citizens to resist misinformation and divisive narratives.
